While polished, perfection often takes the front seat, masking the raw emotional, ReeToxA, the alt-rock project of “Jason McKee” from Melbourne, turns every head with his emotive debut single "Bobbie" of the same name. The single is out across all platforms such as Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, and Amazon Music, and has set the emotional and sonic stage for the debut album ‘Pines Salad,’ which is slated for release on March 31st, 2025. What makes “Bobbie” a standout track is the devastatingly honest lyrics, the melodic and heartfelt instrumentation, and the fervor that pours out with the kingdom of every note and the song's emotional turmoil.
In the music video, “Bobbie,” which Josh Rockman of Rockman Media directed, the song takes on a completely new and visceral feel with the video transforming it into an emotional experience. The video gives off an aura that makes the viewer feel like they are meditating on loss; it was shot while moody and overcast, on Kerferd Rd Pier in ‘Albert Park.’ As he traverses the gloomy setting, McKee’s expression holds rich emotional depth, a man deeply suffering and mired in grief and the insufferable ache of unmade farewells. The storyline is a deeply personal one. “Bobbie” is dedicated to McKee’s late mother. In a tragically sad narrative, he lost her while he was serving a six-month prison sentence. The aching pain of mourning her behind bars, without ever getting to say goodbye, fuels the core of the song, creating a raw emotional thread that never lets up.
The video's use of nostalgic home footage McKee’s complements the most haunting parts of the video. These clips, soft and grainy, serve as a counterbalance to the cool-toned contemporary footage. They bridge memory and mourning in a manner that is both intimate and universal. Just when the shoot appeared to be unable to capture the symbolic bird in flight, an emblem of connection and freedom, one soared into frame at the final moment. Whether it was divine or magic, that spliced the video with a goosebump flourish.
“Bobbie” takes the best from his inspirations, McKee. Nirvana, Pixies, White Stripes, and Elliott Smith all reside in the bones of the music, but he carves out his unique voice. The production is warm and analog due to Australian heavyweight Simon Moro. He allows McKee's lyrics to breathe and break. The band is a lineup of Australia’s best. Kit Riley (Michael Bublé, Savage Garden) on bass, James Ryan (King Canyon) on guitar, and Peter Marin (Jet) on drums. They offer technicolor in the form of subtle yet powerful melodies underscoring the powerful vocals of McKee, blending strength and tenderness.
While “Bobbie” serves as a centerpiece in the collage of songs, the tempo is set for what McKee has called a deeply integrated and almost odylic album. Additionally, “Pines Salad,” a play on a Frankston slang for weed, goes even deeper into a stream of narrative of romantic bewilderment, masculinity, and not belonging. On Ambe, he sings “I feel like a donkey in a thoroughbred show”. These lines bring to life his embodied contradictions in quite extraordinary and strikingly lyrical ways. And these songs are not mere rock ballads, but rather sharpened pages of a self-narrated, resonating diary set on fuzzy guitars and blaring drums.
For ReeToxA’s McKee, “Bobbie” is not merely a song; it`s an uninvoked red mare of the tides. From a surface level, Jason McKee realizes the depths no one wishes to surface. The video's tranquil yet unarmed provocation in conjunction with its vulnerable frame, accompanied by the record strike, leaves no question behind; he is looking to broadcast his story. With over ten thousand likes already on TikTok and Instagram pouring in, the work emerges stream after stream, tear after tear, bird after bird. Whether it is the grungy element, lyrical weight, or emotional impact you are after, “Bobbie” is seeking to emerge with a voice, demanding to be felt, seen, and heard.
